Continuing with my personality test theme today, according to this test I am a Penguin.
Month: October 2001 (Page 3 of 8)
It’s come to my attention recently that a lot of people who are regular readers of ‘words mean things’ don’t know what I do for a living.
I’m a freelance web designer.
[pause to let snickering die down]
More on that later, but first I wanted to run an idea by you. I recently read a cool book called “Branding Yourself Online,” and one of the suggestions is starting an e-mail newsletter to promote yourself and your services. I’m seriously thinking about starting one, with ideas for people to improve their business web sites. I’ve worked on the web since 1996, so I think I have more than enough ideas to make a good start of it. What do you think?
All these myriad personality tests running rampant through the web in general (and weblogs in specific) remind me of my father. He was incredibly curious about humanity and what made people tick. Whenever he would come upon any sort of personality test he’d never seen before, he would want everyone he knew to take it as well. He was particularly fond of one color swatch test, where you would choose from a group of (I think it was 10) color swatches and rate them, from the one you liked the most to the one you liked the least. They came bundled with a book that allowed you to look up each person’s order and get a personality reading from that. I wish I remembered the name of the book – anyone remember this? One interesting thing about the swatches was they weren’t clear colors; they were all slightly off.
That sort of sums up my entire personality, come to think of it – “slightly off.”
Overheard on the Cluetrain e-mail list:
> > Gotta admit, the title “Office of Homeland Security” rings
> > a deep warning bell somewhere…
> > some elusive historical association, I think…:)
>
> It wasn’t the administration’s original choice, but they were
> unable to secure the trademark on “Fatherland.”
I’ve never played any of the online multiplayer games (Asheron’s Call, Ultima Online, etc.), but City of Heroes looks incredibly cool. Create your own superhero and fight evil! That sounds fun. What superhero power would you most like to have? (via Toddshot)
My latest spam e-mail promises that if I click their link, I will get:
Totally nude photos of all 4 of Bin Laden?s wives in a lesbian love pile!
That seems quite a spooky combination of my last two posts. And imagine the search engine hits I’m going to get now! Thank you, spammers.
“I’ve seen ‘Wild at Heart,’ I’ve seen ‘Twin Peaks.’ I’ve already seen this movie.”
-my friend Paul, as we exited David Lynch’s “Mulholland Drive”
While I basically agree with him, Lynch is still a welcome change from the grey expanse that has been the movies in 2001. He’s abandoned the measured reality of “The Straight Story” and gone back to the weirdnesses he’s famous for. It’s said that he shot this story as a possible pilot for a TV series, although I doubt the topless lesbian love scenes would have made it onto CBS. It is overdone and needlessly Lynchian, but it’s fascinating in its own way. And he does amazingly well with scares – even if you can see them coming a mile away, they still make you jump out of your seat. I would love to see Lynch do a full-out scary movie.
Now where did I put those “Twin Peaks” tapes?
I now have a modest store on CafePress where you can purchase t-shirts, mugs and mousepads to signify your love of ‘words mean things.’ Let me know what you think. If you should be good enough to purchase anything, my battered self-esteem thanks you in advance.
Although I am not a programmer (I just play one on TV), I have successfully managed to figure out a way to automatically download all my Blogger posts to my own database, which I’ll be using for my homegrown blog system. I didn’t want to just archive my Blogger posts when I went to the new system, and now I don’t have to. I am pleased. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
