Back from the beyond

Get to know me!

In the movie “Defending Your Life,” it’s how well you faced your fears that determines the true measure of your time on earth. Facing my fears has been a recurring theme in my life for the past six months, and here I am trying to get rid of another one: posting a picture of myself on the site. I’ve given you two choices: grumpy me or happy me with no glasses (and bonus Blogger t-shirt).

I realized that I know what most people I read on the web look like, and I should be at least willing to give them some sense of what a hideous beast I am. If that wasn’t enough, you can also see a picture of my lakefront pad. This is from the living room looking into the dining area. Note the strange lodge-like sofa and chair. The new bookcases look nice, though.

OK. Nothing more to see here. Move along.

Grumpy Adam, definitely. I vote for grumpy.

    Surprise.

is everybody planning on being at least two different people? I vote for happy, just to even things out

  3. kd

happy, definitely. grumpy doesn’t match with the cool lakefront pad.

  4. Xkot

The happy picture brings to mind the phrase “impish grin” so that one gets my vote.

  5. Jennifer

I vote grumpy. Just cause. Thanks so much for your email advice.
    🙂

I’d go with happy, I like the grin. Why you didn’t want to put it up in the first place, I have no clue. 🙂

  7. Arthur

    happy

I never thought I’d see the day when you put a picture of yourself up on here…way to go! The grumpy picture reminds me of back in the days working for a certain employer. It’s the day of the new Adam now – therefore, we must go with happy Adam. I love the t-shirt. *wink*

happy. what were we voting on, again?
great pad, adam. and so clean! i’ll have to post pictures of the cat damage in my house, and gamma’s faux cave paintings, etc.

  10. Adam

Thanks for the comments, everyone. One phobia down, 1,834 to go.

Miguel: I just photographed the clean part. Outside the frame there are newspapers and banana peels as far as the eye can see. 🙂

I vote for the happy one. Lookin’ good! Grumpy looks more like you’re about to give me a lecture on the ills of breaking curfew, or something, I don’t know.
Your place is awesome. You’re inspiring me to post a picture of my cube-y little dorm room, but right now I’m cut off from digital cameras, scanners, oh, the angst! Horrible technology withdrawl angst!

  12. Xkot

Yeah, I forgot to mention what a swingin’ pad Adam has. Austin Powers would be envious of his pad’s mojo.

  13. Adam

Just wanted to say, when I wrote the phrase “I’m giving you two choices,” I didn’t really expect you all to vote. It was just two sides of the same me, that’s all.

  14. Moira

Ha, everything on the Internet is up for a vote….what about “grumpy” in a blogger T-shirt? The wonders of Photoshop….I know, you could have half of the picture happy, then half grumpy. That would satisfy everyone, except the people who didn’t like it.

  15. Moira

Oh, yeah. Where do you live and do you need a roommate? Two roommates, actually? With two cats?

  16. Kevin

Notice the two unplugged Macintosh computers tucked away in the far corner of the dining room. 🙂 Ebay…gotta love it.

OK, so how about having it be random? Sometimes happy, sometimes grumpy. And you could add other emotions to the mix from time to time. We’d never know what to expect. Almost like real life.

  18. kd

what he said (John Banks I mean). just like life!

    Dear Adam:

Congratulations on overcoming your fears, nearly a year late. You look nothing like what I imagined, but that definitely doesn’t mean you look bad. You look more . . . substantial than I would have expected from someone who is obviously so at home with ideas.

Regardless, happy to put a face with a name (there being no suitable replacement for meatspace), and keep up the good work — and the Dune quotes!
