Back from the beyond

Post – May 1, 2002

If you had your life to live over again, is there anything you would do differently? I’m not talking about what you had for breakfast or the color of your new car. Big stuff. Important stuff. Any time where you turned right when you should have turned left at a major life intersection? And if you changed those things, how exactly would your life have changed?

I would have been MUCH cooler in high school!

When I was a kid and my parents told me I couldn’t be an astronaut becaue I would grow up to be too tall to fit into a space capsule, I’d have said “don’t you think in 20 years they’ll have a roomier space ship?”

Many many many things would be different. Mainly I keep thinking of habits. Like if I knew then what I know now and had a chance to do it over, I would probably try to be more diciplined etc.

Heh. Had a conversation with a friend a while ago, about how we wouldn’t have followed the rules quite so much, if we had our youth to live over. Less being “good,” which turns out to be not all that important. (I’m not talking really bad stuff, I’m just talking about being a little more adventurous.)

    What about you, Adam?

I wouldn’t change a thing. I’ve learned something from every experience (good or bad), and the learnings helped me with the next thing that came up.

I would have gotten help with a problem sooner — one that I couldn’t solve myself and that was causing great distress in my life. I most definitely “learned” from it, but feel I would have been able to accomplish more and have more fun if I’d faced it sooner. When the student is ready the teacher appears . . . but it helps if you’re not too afraid or proud to ask!

I would have paid more attention to my friendships with people and relationships in general… I would have trusted myself more and I would have stopped selling myself short. Still working on all of that.

The list of what I would do differently is too long…

I would have taken more chances, worried less that I wouldn’t be good at things that I thought I might enjoy. I’m learning to do that now, but I know I’ve missed out on some great experiences by not taking more risks earlier. Oh well. No great loss, I’m hardly dead yet.

I would have spent time with my dad, talking to him, taking him out, getting to know him when he was hail and hearty instead of staying away from home because of my differences with my mom. By the time I started doing all these things with him, he had only a few months left before the cancer met to his brain which rendered him half paralysed and speech and comprehension difficult. And now he’s been gone nearly two years and I miss him terribly. At least I had those last few months. Some people aren’t even so lucky.
