I was doing some search engine submissions for a client (Elegant Foods – go there and order something immediately) and came to Yahoo. Apparently their policy now (has it always been this way?) is that businesses must pay a $299 yearly fee to be considered for submission to the directory. They mention over and over that this fee doesn’t even guarantee you’ll be listed. I’d love to see what happens to the cheery “renew your Yahoo listing” e-mails that go out to the people who are rejected.

What a bargain!
They’ve been doing that for a couple years. Personally I think it’s part of why Google is kicking their asses. Who wants to search a bunch of listings that only come from the few suckers who will pay? Google’s ranking system is far more useful.
errr.. actually yahoo and google are linked up together and all in cahoots. notice when you continue past yahoo’s normal results it goes to a google search “powered by google” yah.
Sure the search is powered by google, but the directory is still yahoo’s. They used to be free. Everyone else is. I thought they still had a teeny tiny “free listing” link? Maybe I’m thinking of something else.
