Back from the beyond

Post – October 11, 2002

Well, at least Russ Feingold voted against the “U.S. Does Whatever It Wants” resolution. (Feingold in 2004!) I’d love to write some long eloquent post about how insane this whole thing is, and how I’m stunned how little reaction there has been over it. Bush wants war, ho hum. But I’m exhausted. All my outrage and anger is played out. I’m empty. Sometimes the tide is just too strong. I want to be more like Arthur, but even he is feeling a little overwhelmed. Of course, this fatigue just plays into the hands of those who would turn this society so fully into “1984” that we wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. But I don’t know what else to do. I just don’t.

There are some times when you just have to let the tide come in, wash over everything, knock down houses, drown children, ruin crops, and wreck entire wardrobes of silk undies, then let everyone who was looking forward to the tide stand around scratching their heads, wondering, “How did this happen?” Then, if you’ve survived, you get up on a box and you tell them, and you hope they don’t forget again.

Time to batten down the hatches.

I keep thinking that I should be yelling my head off about how stupid this is. But, currently, I have no voice.

Someone told me Bush wants this war because war causes growth in the economy. Do you think he will base his next campaign on this warped plank?

Bush wants the war because it distracts from domestic policy, further cements the wildly expanding powers of government, keeps oil and military hardware interests placated, and avenges his dad’s embarrassment.

Pretty good deal from his perspective, I imagine.

I think the “war stimulates economy” hypothesis has a lot going for it. Other plausible reasons are provided, but I think they’re mostly sleight of hand. Unending war for this reason is straight out of 1984. Notably, it doesn’t matter who we’re fighting. Our allies and enemies may trade places one day to the next, but our media will always try to cover for that.

I’m pleased to say myCongressman and one of my Senators voted against the resolution too. In less than a month I’ll have a chance to vote the Congressman back in office. Anyone running against the Senator who voted for war will get my vote.

I saw Howard Zinn speak last week, and I feel like we can’t just roll over and let this happen. Our collective voices must be heard. Thank you Russ for voting with your constituency. Why is that so rare these days, and why do we put up with it?
