Back from the beyond

Post – January 1, 2003

Do you go to the movies alone? If you do, are you comfortable with it? I go to movies by myself all the time, and it usually doesn’t bother me. I even prefer it sometimes, especially when the theater is almost empty and I can think of it as my own private screening. But sometimes, when the theater is crowded, I feel a little strange about it. Today was one such time. Plus, I was sitting in a row with a sort of half-aisle in front of me, so everyone in the theater used my legs as a turnstile. One woman stamped down on my foot so hard, I almost cried out. But rather than slinking away as she should, she forced me to acknowledge her apology before she would move on. Then, the movie didn’t start until 15 minutes after the posted time, and then we watched the previews with sound only. Not Star Theatres’ finest hour. Or mine, I guess.

Happy New Year.

    So, what did you see?

Let’s just say I saw another romantic comedy where they should have shut production down after the first couple of weeks. Charming leads can do great things on their own, but if you don’t see any spark, any real chemistry between them, a romantic comedy is sunk.

I still enjoyed myself more than at “Catch Me If You Can,” though.

The only movies I ever remember watching alone were Safe (which I didn’t finish), The Royal Tennenbaums, which had me sobbing, and then a bunch of porn.

I actually really enjoy going to both movies and restaurants alone, much to the chagrin of my parents and sister. My sister has a friend, who, when she sees someone eating/seeing a movie alone alone, tends to start to cry and has to leave the restaurant/theatre. Weird. But there?s definitely something to be said about enjoying one?s own company.

I absolutely love eating alone. In fact, it took several months of living with my boyfriend before I got accustomed to sharing meals again. Now I’ve got an apron, and probably a heart condition, but I still prefer the company of a book over lunch to most people I know.

John: Not me, I hope. 🙂

I went to a play by myself tonight, and it was great! Not just the play, but the experience. I felt very urban. I was wearing my dress-up scarf and furry mittens. It was kind of a sneak-peek engagement before it really opens, and I had my notebook out to do a little listing, so I think some people thought I was a reviewer or something. I got some interesting glances. Highly recommended, although I do want someone to talk about the play with now.

So was the lead hot or what?

Adam: of course I prefer you over a book — I went to lunch with you even when I was reading The Bush Dyslexicon, and that’s been a damn good book.

Not so much hot as adorable–in a scruffy, comic relief sort of way. The fact that he is an excellent actor made *him* uber-hot. Then again, put any guy on stage and I think he’s sexy.

I’ve often gone to plays by myself… but since I was a “theater person” I didn’t necessarily view it as a social activity that required company to validate the experience. (My, how pretentious that sounded! Sorry.) Movies — I’m not so into movies, and mostly the only reason I GO is for the social experience. That said, I went once on my own to see something no one else was interested in, and I found the experience quite liberating. I suppose I should do it again someitme soon.

And yes, it’s all about lunch/dinner/whatever with a book. Damn people are always wanting to talk to me and interrupt my reading, like I must be unhappy with no one to talk to. Dammit, go away and let me read!
