What are we, in junior high school? What’s next – chanting “Fatty Fatty Boombalatty!” in front of Volkswagen dealerships?

    I understatnd there’s actually nothing French about french fries. They don’t eat them over there, or so I’m told. Correct me on this?

    When I read about restaurants doing this, I could write it off as individual idiocy.

    Now I’m embarassed, as a citizen.

    Well, they do eat them over there and they are wonderful, but they’re not French in origin.

    But if this is the level to which our national discourse has sunk, we are truly screwed. Can we make war profiteer or dumb cowboy food jokes? What would be an appropriate name for Texas Toast?

    How long until we return the statue of liberty?

    French fries are Belgian, I believe.

    Reminds me of the whole “Victory Cabbage” deal from so many years ago. Then again, at least then one had the excuse that we were actually at war with Germany.

    They do eat french fries in France, where they are known as “Pommes Frites,” although they are far more popular in Belgium, where they originated.

    Europeans often eat fries with mayo on them, no ketchup allowed. Freaks. Then again there’s always fries with gravy and cheese curds. Yummmm. I’m actually salivating.

    Lisa is right: fried potatoes are more popular in Belgium. And Nik’s referring to poutine, which is québécois, not French. :->}

    I suppose one tiny positive thing is that the Culinarily Outraged legislators all seem to be Republicans . . . what morons! Can you imagine the howls of laughter from the European press?
