Pizza poll

For those out there who live in the Madison area, a poll question for the comments: Who makes the best pizza in Madison, and why? (For my part, the last outstanding pizza in Madison was Sal’s on State Street, which closed a long time ago.)

Sal’s was definitely the best. No argument there. I went to a place on Frances called Neil’s (?) a few months ago. They had the big NYC style ovens like Sal’s and it tasted pretty good but it was also 2:00 am so I’m not sure how reliable my critique is.

Was it Ian’s? The pizza style is similar to Sal’s, but not in the same league, I thought.

Don’t you have a place in Madison that actually brings pizza to your door? Is it called something like Dominoes??

Sal’s predates me, I fear. But I like Ian’s a lot, and enjoy an occasional white pizza (aka heart attack on a plate) from Casa Bianca.

I feel that Sal’s hasn’t really changed. It may have been Casa Bianca, and now Pizza Di Roma, but it’s still the same smarmy (and I say that with warmth) italian men serving the same pizza. But, maybe it’s because I haven’t given up on calling the place Sal’s, no matter what sign is on the outside.

Ian’s is also tasty for crazy flavors, like Macaroni & Cheese (my wife’s fav), but those are only appropriate at bar time. Our favorites for delivery include Glass Nickel and Falbo’s (more for their famous ‘falzones’). Just good, doughy pizza without the grease that Pizza Hut and Pizza Pit slop on. The worst by far is Rocky’s.

Pizza Oven on Monona, with its truly antique and funky decor. Their cracker-crust pizza is light & non-greasy (at least the veg model).

I don’t think we can forget about the sublime thin crust pizza at the Greenbush. And you are right, it was Ian’s. Neil is my brother. How do I keep forgetting that?

Ian’s does plain cheese, sausage and pepperoni pizzas as well as “crazy” flavors. What sets Ian’s apart is the crust: thin, crispy on the bottom and chewy on the top, highly supportive of generous toppings, rolled in corn meal the way crust SHOULD be, and the slices are the perfect size. I grew up in and around Italian restaurants and pizzerias, and Ian’s best evokes those childhood memories. Plus they deliver now.

Oh, man, they deliver now? I know what I’m having for dinner tonight.

I agree with Becky. Pizza Oven is great.

Another place that has a “take it home and heat it up” pizza is Gino’s – we’ve had the spinach and cheese pizza – awesome if you like spinach – and their sausage pizza and their sausage and pepperoni pizza. These are deep dish with lots of filling and good taste – the crust on the bottom is great, but thick on the side almost like a bread. They are in the freezer case.
