Attitude adjustment inventory

1. I have some good friends who care about me. Not many, but I’d rather have a few good friends than an army of acquaintances.
2. I have a wonderful family.
3. I’m in reasonably good health, and walking 3 miles every day.
4. I work for myself, which is not lucrative but has many more important benefits.
5. I have a beautiful home that’s comfortable and suits me perfectly.
6. I’ve met a lot of cool people through this weblog.

Now you do yours….

I finally got to shoehorn a Top Ten topic into the Top Ten Blog. I never seem to be there at the right time (ie, writing the #1 entry). I think I’m better at thinking up topics than I am writing entries. I even had to cheat and post two entries to a list in order to get the chance. But I think it was a good topic: Top Ten British Porn Film Titles.

Friends of mine who get HBO have turned me on to Six Feet Under, a show about a family-owned funeral home. I’ve been watching back episodes on videotape – all I have left is the two-hour season finale. I like the show, but all the characters are almost pathologically unhappy. Still, it’s leagues better than most of the dreck the networks want us to digest (Bob Patterson, anyone?).

“Can’t we just have sex? It doesn’t have to mean anything.”
-David Fisher

“I’ve never worked in a funeral home that was this depressing.”
-Angela (Illeana Douglas, in a whip-cracking cameo)

It’s too bad that Douglas didn’t stay longer than one episode – her positive, say-it-like-it-is atttitude is just what those sad sack Fishers need.

Summer vines

I love how the light shines through the screen and vines that cover some of my patio windows. This photo really needs higher resolution to do it justice, so you can click on the image for a 800 x 600 version.

I have an idea.

Start a weblog directory where anyone can add their own site. The emphasis will be on writing your own description of your weblog. You can also include a link to a small image (sort of like Miguel’s shoe project). People can post comments about your site for others to read. There might be an occasional “review” of a particularly good site by guest reviewers, but the main thing would be readers and writers talking about weblogs. There would be lots of database fields you could fill in about your weblog, so people could sort by topic, location, etc.

I love what Amazon does on their book pages. You get all the pertinent details, along with commentary by the author, traditional reviewers, and all different kinds of readers. The idea is to do that for weblogs.

What do you think? I could really use some feedback on this.

Now that Blogger is starting to open up development through their new API, some interesting stuff is starting to happen. I like the idea of BlogBuddy, a Windows app that allows you to post without going to the Blogger site. But does that direct communication mean things are faster and less congested? I have no idea.

Regardless, next week is slated for heavy development on my personal blog system. I did a basic weblog system for my old employer, so I can use that as a starting point. I think it’ll be fun to do.

The Washington Post has an fascinating story about how fancy housing development planners are disguising the required “affordable housing” into townhouses, so they look more like the nearby mansions. (Good commentary on Plastic about it, too.) The small picture gives you an idea of the kind of monstrosities people are building now. Yuck.

“People don’t want to live near a $120,000 town house,” said one planner.

Boo hoo.

Reminds me of my condo building, where you can rent a boat slip on the lake for a nominal fee, but only if you own a unit and live there. Renters and absentee owners aren’t even eligible. The board is deathly worried about the “flip-flop factor,” with lots of “low-class” people coming down to use the dock. Horrors! I figure if we rented out the slips to all comers, we could reduce or even eliminate our condo fee. Snobbery has its price.
