Quote of the Day
“Everything in life is a slippery slope.”
Back from the beyond
After months of procrastination, I finally called my mother’s school district to see if they would accept the donation of her iMac. She doesn’t use the thing, and her frustration with it causes her to get a knot in her stomach every time she sees it, much less turns it on. No one will believe this, but it was her idea to buy the thing in the first place, not mine.
For many years I was a passionate technology missionary, believing that everyone’s life would be enriched by a computer (and in later years, internet access). But I’ve learned that for a substantial portion of the population, a computer will never be anything more than an intrusion into their daily lives.
I still think that’s a shame. But I’ve given up promoting it.
Altruism is overrated.
YOU MAY ALREADY BE A WINNER!
Prize to the first person who can explain where my new tagline comes from. (Not you, Amanda. That would be cheating.)
The Weblog Recruitment Project proceeds apace, with the inauguration of Lisa Crankypants. My friend Lisa D. will be sharing her cranky views with the world – trust me, it’ll be worth a look.
If anyone else has been thinking about starting a weblog, but didn’t want to deal with setup and design issues, let’s talk. The online world can always use new interesting voices.
Another reason healthy eating is overrated. (Personally tonight, I tucked into a portion of spaghetti carbonara from Tutto Pasta larger than a jack-o-lantern, and I’m feeling no ill effects. I did bring a lot of it home, though.)
“I have self-esteem. Which is pretty amazing, because I’m probably somebody who wouldn’t necessarily have a lot of self-esteem, as I am considered a minority.
If you are a woman, if you are a person of color, if you are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, if you’re a person of size, if you’re a person of intelligence, if you’re a person of integrity, then you are considered a minority in this world.”
-Margaret Cho, “Notorious C.H.O.”
This concert movie is out on video. It’s almost “unbearably hilarious” at times, as John said, but it’s also well-written and thought-provoking. A good combination for the new year, if you ask me.
Do you go to the movies alone? If you do, are you comfortable with it? I go to movies by myself all the time, and it usually doesn’t bother me. I even prefer it sometimes, especially when the theater is almost empty and I can think of it as my own private screening. But sometimes, when the theater is crowded, I feel a little strange about it. Today was one such time. Plus, I was sitting in a row with a sort of half-aisle in front of me, so everyone in the theater used my legs as a turnstile. One woman stamped down on my foot so hard, I almost cried out. But rather than slinking away as she should, she forced me to acknowledge her apology before she would move on. Then, the movie didn’t start until 15 minutes after the posted time, and then we watched the previews with sound only. Not Star Theatres’ finest hour. Or mine, I guess.
Happy New Year.
CRAWFORD, Texas (AP) – President Bush said Tuesday that an attack by Saddam Hussein or a terrorist ally “would cripple our economy,” offering new justification for potential war against Iraq even as he said North Korea’s nuclear ambitions can be curbed without military conflict.
Is it possible that people are beginning to catch on to how crazy and irrational this Iraq vendetta is? Probably not. But in a new year, we can hope.
Punch-drunk movie reviewers
Been meaning to post this for some time. Back when I was watching “Punch-Drunk Love” just about every day, I was reading a lot of reviews and such for it on the internet. I came upon this synopsis of the movie on some site I wish I could remember the name of, but I can’t. Still, I think it’s hilarious how many things are wrong with this small blurb:
Barry, the owner of a phone-sex business that is slowly failing, becomes obsessed with collecting pudding coupons that offer frequent flyer miles. He eventually earns enough to fly around the world. When he learns that a woman whom he had met by chance and about whom he cannot stop thinking has left for vacation in Hawaii, he uses the coupons for a trip to find her.
Did they see the movie? Any of it?
