Dear Orbitz:

No, I don’t want to click the damn reindeer or snowflake or whatever animated crap you’re going to use next. I have an attention span longer than a cabbage, so it’s not really entertainment for me. Go away and leave me alone.

Thanks.

Went to see “Solaris” again with Dave and Susan last night – the final showing of the movie in Madison, with all the new stuff opening today. I’m sure Sparky will be disappointed to learn that I liked it even more this time. It takes enormous liberties with the book, but on its own it’s a fascinating brain-expander on questions like: What if you could have someone back you’ve lost? What would you give up to make that happen? Would having them back be a blessing or a curse? What if how you remembered them wasn’t the way they truly were?

I guess I’m feeling philosophical today.

The saddest thing about Trent Lott’s troubles is that his friends are deserting him not because they thought what he said was wrong, but simply because he’s become a political liability. I still think this will all be quickly forgotten – unlike “1984,” in our society today we don’t need Winston Smith to erase our memories for us.

Really enjoyed last night’s “Alias.” I’ve always liked Marshall, the geeky Q to Sydney’s Bond. And tonight he even got to go on a mission! His chemistry with Syd is great, which led me to think, why can’t the geeky, funny, smart guy ever get the girl? Marshall has more personality in his mouse-button-pushing finger than Vaughn has in his whole body. If you ask me.

I’m back – sort of

This hosting crap has gotten so extreme that my friend Paul calls it my “hobby.” Yeah, sort of like if someone put a gun to your head and demanded that you learn needlepoint. That sort of hobby.

How was everyone else’s weekend?

My favorite uncomfortable pop culture moment of the week

Tom Brokaw was on “The Daily Show,” talking about the watches he bought in Baghdad with Saddam Hussein’s face on them.

Brokaw: I got several, actually.
Jon Stewart: Really? I would love to have one of those.
Brokaw: Well, maybe you’ll find one in your Christmas stocking this year.
[PAUSE]
Stewart (stage whisper, behind his hand): I’m a Jew!

My only prediction about the effect of Trent Lott’s comments praising Strom Thurmond’s segregationist bid for the presidency in 1948 is that the whole thing will be quickly forgotten.

?I want to say this about my state. When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We?re proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn?t have had all these problems over all these years either.?

Yeah, that’s easy to misinterpret. Words. mean. things.
