Some think it was a brilliant move to get people to stop talking about his Iraq lies. I think he just committed political suicide. Same-sex marriage was just an abstract concept until Frist and dubya got involved. Now, it’s a reality and the parallels between those who used to say “you can’t marry that black man” and those who now say “you two men can’t marry” are becoming more apparent. Rather than a potential battle that’s low on the priority list, dubya has made this a civil rights issue and one more example of the intolerance of the Republicans. He’s vulnerable on this one, especially with swing voters.

It’s nice how this is being framed as a backlash against gay and lesbian activists who took things too far. The fact is, there is no scenario in which religious conservatives would have allowed gay marriage or anything even resembling gay marriage; and there is no scenario in which Bush would not let his barly-checked religious fanaticism sway him against us. This fight had to happen one way or the other, so I’m glad it’s happening now, with an incompetent president whose incompetence is rising to level impossible for even some of his staunchest supporters to ignore. Now, when he’s embattled on more than one front, is the time for every self-respecting gay and lesbian American (and all of our straight allies) to rise up and make some fucking racket. I’m talking picketing weddings. I’m talking about chaining ourselves to the offices of clerks of court. I’m talking demonstrations and vigils. We need an ACT UP for marriage. Whatever the failings of far-left gay culture in terms of making our case to the country at large, that activist spirit will save our cause.
