This has been obvious to me for a while, since I’ve considered myself unemployed for several years but I have never been eligible for unemployment benefits in that time. There are gobs of people all over the country who were not laid off or fired but who ended up out of work. Whether they are returning to work from raising kids or, like me, tried to start a business that didn’t pan out, they are off the radar but still seeking work.
And I love the way the headline emphasizes the fact that unemployment is down — a good thing on its face — instead of the fact that it’s down because people are giving up. That can’t be good.
Maybe, foreign policy notwithstanding, the economy does better under Democratic presidents because whether they agree with Democratic politics or not, people know that domestic policy is actually a priority. “I don’t like him, but he’s really good to me.” Not the first time I’ve heard that.
