My friend Caitlin Skinner, who is helping me with marketing my web design services, gave me the best advice the other day. I’ve been a little down that business has been incredibly slow, and I don’t see a lot of jobs on the horizon. She said whenever I talk to anyone about my business, I should say how incredibly busy and happy I am – no matter how much of a lie that is. And it makes sense: people want to hire someone who is busy, not someone who can’t find work. So I’m going to try it out on you guys. Ready?
You: So Adam, how’s business?
Me: I’m really busy. Things are fantastic. I’m always looking for new opportunities, though.
…so did you buy it?
Caitlin’s advice to you is very sound. I actually *have* been busy but currently I have three or four projects that have stalled at mid-point. However, with little marketing effort, I’ve keep getting requests for quotes on new jobs, which presents another dilemma: what if these pan out and the stalled ones rebecome active all at once? Yikes!
That sounds like a pretty nice problem to have, Maurice. 🙂
Yes and no. It’s hard being alone to do the actual coding and the schmoozing. ;-o}
Sold!
When you’re too busy, that’s when it’s nice to have relationships with other professionals you can subcontract or refer to. Not that I would know anything about being busy…I mean, I’m incredibly busy and happy blah blah blah.
Adam, you need to control that little eye twitch when you say it. Otherwise, quite convincing.
It is good advice for more than just business. People are attracted to others who are positive. I mean, how much time do you really want to spend with someone who whines and complains all the time, every day, every time you see them?

In order to be successful one must project the image of success. The real estate king said that, you know.
