Paycheck

Paycheck

I really don’t remember anything about this movie. I think a corporation came and erased my memory. But I have a feeling that’s not such a bad thing.

About the only thing I remember was a misspelled headline on a newspaper featured prominently in the movie. Being Mr. Language Person, I laughed out loud, while no one else noticed.

Story of my life.

Not recommended.

    What was the misspelling?

The previews looked pretty good on this movie. Well, up until they showed Ben Affleck as the lead character. What? Was Carson Daly not available?

I wondered how bad this movie had to be when Ben “Meathead” Affleck was on The Daily Show promoting it. They showed a clip, of a John Woo movie, which was of Affleck and another actor–who appeared genuinely disturbed by the bad acting going on–sitting in a diner, talking. When a Woo film, which I imagine has some gun-play and car chases, is being promoted using Affleck talking and the other actor is staring dumbly at him with thought balloon saying “this guy is rich?”, it ain’t good.

The previews looked tempting, but, as always during previews, those with me and I decided it would be a matinee movie at best (and then only because explosions look better on a big screen). Previews indicate what movies are to be seen on screen, on video/TV (and then whether bought, rented, PPV, pay service, or just wait until it hits network), or never ever, ever

In other news — there was a time I thought Ben Affleck was ok. I don’t think he’s actually DUMB (I’ll accept being wrong there), However, he does seem to be taking a big’ ol career nosedive. Did he cry in this movie?

Jesse: It was actually a punctuation mistake, but I thought saying it that way would make me sound even geekier, if that’s possible. I don’t even remember the exact headline, but it was something like “Allcom Debuts It’s New Laser Technology.”

Sherri: I liked Affleck a lot in “Chasing Amy.” But since then, not so much. Matt Damon is much less irritating, despite having starred in “Stuck on You.”

Adam, again we disagree on a movie. You must admit that this movie is better than TimeLine, A movie you left off your best movie list. Sure Ben is not the greatest American actor, but he wasn’t terrible. And Woo actually, to me, toned it down a bit, no skidding car dances, with Tom’s hair waving in the wind. I enjoyed wondering what the 19 items meant and how they would work into the story. This movie was well worth the matinee price.

Steve: I would say “Timeline” and “Paycheck” were equally bad, but for widely different reasons. I would also say I enjoyed “Mission Impossible 2” much, much more than either. Not saying much, but still.

And come on – you’re telling me that the ultra tech genius Affleck played couldn’t have sent himself a coded message somehow that would bypass his employers? And the use of the items was laughably implausible.

As I said, I’ve liked Affleck in the past. But he was given absolutely nothing to play in this movie.
