Back from the beyond

“First they came for the Communists, but I was not a Communist, so I said nothing. Then they came for the Social Democrats, but I was not a Social Democrat, so I did nothing. Then came the trade unionists, but I was not a trade unionist. And then they came for the Jews, but I was not a Jew, so I did little. Then when they came for me, there was no one left to stand up for me.”

-Martin Niemoller

I did something today I’ve been meaning to do for years: joined the ACLU. It’s a small thing, but it means a lot to me. I’m unhappy it took me this long to do it. I was struck when visiting their site to sign up that their symbol is the Statue of Liberty (note jaw-dropping splash page). I would encourage anyone dismayed at the scary turn this country has taken to consider joining up with me.

Good for you!! I can’t even remember — who was it who tried to make “card-carrying member of the ACLU” into an insult? Nixon?

Super idea — I’ll join you. Do you think you risk getting on the Patriot Act s*** list?

Isn’t that the best reason to do it?

    Damn cookie evaporation.

I’m only partly joking about the government lists — the Viet Nam War protesters (even the perfectly lawful ones) regularly turned up with FBI files on them.

    What’s cookie evaporation?

I suspect that the spontaneous sublimation of cookies could be caused by molecular instability caused by browsers, as both CF and PHP are generally thought to be highly stable re: how they treat sessions.

Yes, I am blaming the victim: Moe-Zilla.

They evaporated again. I blame electrons.
