I won’t bother you with my usual rant against Daylight Saving Time this year. I’ll just ask: is there any truly good reason to continue this arcane practice? I mean, a serious, societal reason that justifies this strange group hypnosis? If there is, I want to hear it.

A friend of mine the other day said, without much explanation, `They [the government] save so much money that day!’ The only explanation I can think of for such a remark is some sort of savings on utilities (people use less electricity if they go to sleep after fewer hours of darkness), but it seems any such savings would be offset by the opposite effect the other way (`Daylight Wasting Time’, or whatever it’s called).
Er, `… “They save so much money that *w*ay!”‘
Maybe next time they decide to screw us all with nonsense (this fall) let’s all give them the collective Blog “Finger”
oops, forgot to sign my name to this brilliance.
🙂
oh, and check out my silly little contest – for all you music buffs
and since i’ve shamelessly plugged myself, Adam automaticly gets a prize – luv ya babe
If anyone out there is ambitious enough to begin a petetion for the abolition of Daylight Saving (or whatever it’s called) I, for one, would be happy to sign it.
Someone somewhere (I think in Germany) did a study to determine how much energy daylight savings time actually saved, and it was like two 100-watt lightbulbs’ worth per household. I’d rather go around my house turning off lights. Someone else did a study to determine how many lives daylight savings time costs each year (from accidents caused by sleepy people) and found out it was a significant number – there *is* a spike in the accident statistics right around the change each year. This latter study is outlined in the book “The Sleep Thieves” which I highly recommend yet am too lazy to go find a link for.

Oh wait…you said “serious, societal reason”. There isn’t one.
So you don’t have to go to work in the dark — if you work 1st shift, that is. I liken it to boy/girl/boy/girl line-ups in school.
I’ve actually heard serious proposals to make DST permanent — which would save on all the goofy transitions, but irks me aesthetically.
Frankly, rather than changing the clocks, I’d rather change work hours and TV schedules. (“Okay, on Monday we start working 9 to 6 …”)
