The mother of a real bubble boy is protesting the movie “Bubble Boy.” Have we really lost control to that degree? (Of course, as usual, she hasn’t seen the movie she’s protesting.) I’m sure someone who superglued his hand to his naughty bits is just about ready to come forward and vehemently protest how his predicament was mishandled in “American Pie 2.”
A columnist for the New York Press wrote a better commentary on this than I could. But trust me, I have the gut feeling that there are a lot more valid reasons to picket “Bubble Boy” than its depiction of the immune suppressed.
Eh. I think I’d probably be pissed off in her position, too. If a bubble boy movie had been made by someone whose parents weren’t brother and sister, and she had complained about *that*, she’d have been out of line (think GLAAD and Kevin Smith) . . . but her son’s memory is being dredged up in support of a grotesquely bad movie experience.
What surprises me is that Asian groups aren’t furious about the “You won five hundred dollar!” sequence excerpted in the commercials.
I have to disagree. Her son’s memory has nothing to do with it – it’s not about him. If the movie was about him, maybe I would cut her some slack. Did she protest the Seinfeld bubble boy, an obnoxious jerk?
People have to just start accepting that the universe is not about them. If people spent as much time trying to improve the lives of themselves and those around them that they do complaining about real and imagined slights, the world would be a better place.
Plus, as usual in these situations, she’s calling attention to a minor, most likely laugh-free comedy that would go largely unnoticed without her protest.
OK I’ll shut up now. I guess this topic just, as Grandpa Simpson would say, angries up my blood.
The Seinfeld bubble boy, while as unfunny as most of the show it was on, was at least an intelligent attempt to make light of that situation. That’s what I meant — you only have the right to make fun of human tragedy if you do it *right*. Inspirational Disney pap should be confined to cartoon animals.
“People have to just start accepting that the universe is not about them.” Best damn advice I’ve seen in ages. Our culture is so self-focused that no one can see over their own nose.
People are also trying to regulate taste, which is impossible. Yes, it’s insensitive to make fun of kids in bubbles. But you know, the world is full of insensitive people and sooner or later you’re going to need to let it roll off your back.
I’m gonna stop now for fear of repeating my Jay and Silent Bob weblog rant 😉
