Back from the beyond

Post – August 2, 2003

Watching “The Royal Tenenbaums” again with Jesse yesterday, two things occurred to me.

1. I have an intense love for this movie.
2. Gene Hackman’s performance as Royal Tenenbaum is one of my favorite performances in movies, ever.

Trivia about me (isn’t it always about me?): My dad more or less _is_ Royal Tenenbaum. Apparently the similarities between Tenenbaum and my dad elicited audible gasps from my brother, my sister, and my mother when each of them (independently) viewed the movie for the first time. I was prepared by them before I saw it, so I wasn’t as surprised as they were, but it still was pretty startling.

Or maybe not. My wife’s late father had a lot of Tenenbaum in him, too. Maybe it’s a generational thing. Maybe there are vast numbers of Royal Tenenbaums out there, and Gene Hackman just did a really good job of tapping into that.

    Anyway. Now you know.

My dad, in a lot of spooky ways, *is* Jeff “The Dude” Lebowski from “The Big Lebowski.” I wrote about this in the past:
