Back from the beyond

Post – January 13, 2003

Here’s a question for all you out there who do frequent business on eBay. I recently won an auction for a video game, where the postage was listed as $5 for a tiny cartridge. Apparently then he sent the thing regular mail, and two weeks later it hasn’t arrived. So there’s no way I can prove he didn’t send it, and no way to prove I didn’t receive it. In this situation, am I just out of luck as the buyer? Or does the seller have a responsibility to get the item to me? And thus, has to either refund my money or resend the item?

I don’t do much business on eBay and this has never happened to me before, so I don’t know what the rules are. Any thoughts?

It could still be coming, so wait a few more days. Regular parcel post can take forever. You’re pretty screwed unless the seller shipped it with insurance. Then they have to file a claim, or whatever. You can always happen to mention in their feedback that you never really got the product. That makes them come around sometimes.
As for the rediculous $5 for shipping a little tiny thing: don’t forget about “handling.” Shipping is one thing, but handling is quite another.

Some people charge a lot for S&H; others don’t. I try to find sellers who charge minimum handling, and I’ve also questioned people about suspiciously high shipping charges — sometimes they reduce it; sometimes they have a reasonable explanation for it.

As for your parcel, it could have gotten lost. It’s the buyer’s responsibility to ask and pay for shipping insurance.

You can leave negative feedback saying that you never got your item, but I would try talking to the seller first. Certainly there are cheats on eBay, but some of the nicest people I’ve ever dealt with have been on eBay — so your seller might try to accomodate you.

I’d just say wait it out and if it doesn’t come, contact the seller. If the seller doesn’t help you out, give them negative feedback — I guarantee the threat of negative feedback should be enough. I thought Florida was for crooks :).

John, you, of all people, should know crooks like it better where the weather is cold and people are so wrapped in their warm down jackets, wooly scarves, ear flap hats and thick gloves that they can’t waddle fast enough to catch anyone.

By the way, the high here today was in the 60’s. Just so you know. :>
