I’ve been thinking about Top Ten Blog lately. It’s finally happened – my last post was so long ago, it’s fallen off the main page. It was only about a month ago, but early on I was posting just about every day. And the page is now stuck on a baffling “workplace jokes” list. For the last couple of months I’ve been finding the list topics people post to be difficult to contribute to. I think Haidi (on weblog hiatus or I would link to her) is amazing and wonderful and her idea for TTB! was great. But it seems to be losing some steam.
What do you think?
I think a lot of the people who participate now are tiresome. And there’s honestly only so far you can go before driving an idea into the ground anyway; I don’t see myself posting much there anymore unless it gets pruned.
hmm…so how do you join?
eh, workplace jokes. i figure it goes in cycles, you can’t always be brilliant. great idea, i agree with that, and mike is probably right too; it just gets old after a while – which is why it’s not a bad idea to make room for new people.
I agree with Miguel. It’s just having a lull and will be fun again eventually.
I’ve cancelled the web hosting of Haidi.org. I just don’t have anything to say any more (not on the Web, at any rate). I’ve been paying for the domain hosting these last few months just to keep Top Ten Blog going, but I don’t want to pay for it any more, especially since it’s become so unfunny.
I keep hoping it’s just a lull, like Xkot says, and I try my best to start cool topics and get it going again, but it’s just staying uncool.
It’s a hard thing to consider. I invite new people because the older people are getting tired of it and can’t live and breathe top ten lists 24/7. Sometimes the new people turn out cool and sometimes not. I just feel it’s gotten too diluted. And yet at the same time, it would have become boring if I hadn’t invited any new members. I also don’t have the heart to kick anyone out, even if they’re consistently unfunny, because I want it to be about fun and getting people together–not about putting pressure on people to be funny. And what’s unfunny to me might be hilarious to someone else.
Anyway, it’s been really cool and I want to thank you guys for participating and making it so awesome. If anyone wants to start their own top ten blog, or take over the old blogger account, they’re welcome to it. (I would particularly be open to Xkot taking it since I think out of all of us, he really enjoys top ten lists the most.)
(guilt) I fell off posting to Top Ten because….even though I usually really enjoyed it, I just couldn’t think in the top ten format after a while. Oh well….it was great while it lasted.
