Questions I’d Like To Ask Pro-War People
1. Don’t you think the terrorist threat on American soil will skyrocket with an invasion of Iraq? Is overthrowing Saddam worth that?
2. Why now? What changed to warrant an invasion?
3. What specific threat does Saddam pose to Americans?
4. Does the U.N. inspection even matter? In other words, would you want to go to war no matter what they did or didn’t find? It’s impossible to prove a negative.
5. While we’re at it, aren’t there other repressive regimes we should be overthrowing?
6. Let’s say we go in, and kill Saddam. Yay. Then what?
A major problem I’m having is that no one seems to be asking these or many other questions of those either in support of war or in charge of it. We are shockingly passive. I’m pleased about the protests. But I think we have to start demanding answers as well. We deserve them.
bbbbbbbvvvhh
Huh?
A leader who threatens his local area will be ousted at the cost of a few thousand ordinary lives. If anyone poses an immediate threat, I’d say it’s these home grown terrorist groups. And I don’t just mean Al Quedia, I mean the skinheads who burn crosses and lob molative cocktails at abortion clinics. Some jerk in Texas just MISPLACES seven vials of the plague. Come on, we’re an even greater threat to ourselves. Still not convinced? Ask a resident of Oklahoma City what brought down their federal building. Ask the residents of Littleton, Colorado who killed over a dozen students and teachers one April morning. Ask almost any resident of inner city areas who killed their parent, or their siblings, or their children. Not Saddam.
I would add, who profits from this war? A President, who becomes “untouchable” when the country is at war? An ex-General & his cronies, who have the lock on profits from smallpox vaccinations? The Defense contractors (the Military-Industrial Complex that Eisenhower warned us about in the 50’s)? Seems the Bushmen are more than a little compromised in these areas. We need good investigative reporting but, with media like National Public Radio and the New York Times enthusiastically on the war bandwagon (this was not true during the Viet Nam War), mostly what the public hears is the Saddam-Is-Hitler drumbeat. Where are Woodward & Bernstein when we need them? Follow the money.
To the both of you up there: Exactly!
As someone who’s not American, I would add, “Why should the U.S. be in the business of unilaterally overthrowing repressive regimes?” I still remember the inaction of the international community in Rwanda in ’94 (?). I don’t care if that was more a case of civil war; what matters to me is seeing how the international community can let a massacre occur if it will have little or no economic impact on them.
By the way, if even NPR has hopped on the war bandwagon, then start getting your news and current events online from the CBC or the BBC. :->}
What I don’t understand is why peace movements traditionally have such little impact; fail, basically. How can a war in defense of a lifestyle (oil) have so much support, at least from those who seem to matter?
Eh, forget that last question.
Adam, what you see is the danger of letting your child go on the web when you are out of the room.
I swear to God, I didn’t write that. But, given what I’ve seen of her attempts to do a Google search, that does look like Emily’s handiwork.
#1) No. Yes. #2) Nothing – other than more of the same. #3) He wants us to die; and he’s gathered the means to achieve that via India. He also harbors terrorist cells, as well as one Abu Nedal, who also want us to die. #4) No. Yes. You’re quite right — it is impossible to prove a negative. Fortunately, many positives HAVE been proven. #5) Yes. #6) We help the freed Iraqis put someone in power that doesn’t want us dead.
And finally, your questions HAVE been asked numerous times and ANSWERED numerous times. Surprisingly, many extreme left European newspapers (The Gaurdian, for one) have brought many of these facts to light. Unfortunately, the scooped (and, therefore, offended) mainstream media over here refuses to print these facts. And you shouldn’t be pleased by the protests, because they’re propped up by the Communist World Workers Party. (Thank The Nation, another left magazine, for that info.) The Communist regimes throughtout history and the world have been, and are, some of the worst offenders of human rights the world has ever known. (Check out the Black Book of Communism.) And, finally, you don’t have to “demand” these answers; try reading; they’re right in front of you, if you choose to look.
Those rotton cawmuniss, I done KNEW that’s who it was ALL along!
In case you didn’t know, I was being sarcastic.
I could tell.
