Back from the beyond

Post – March 19, 2003

This week, I splurged and bought an IBM optical mouse. It has a swoopy shape that fits well in my hand, and the scroll wheel has a bright blue LED behind it, giving it a sort of otherworldly glow, like a spaceship in a 50s sci-fi movie. It’s funny how the smallest things can bring such pleasure.

“It’s funny how the smallest things can bring such pleasure.”
    Now that was ambiguious. 😀

    Heh. Size queen.
I was just wondering why it is that we can now only take comfort in our possessions/acquisitions. Or good food. I feel like the total tool of an American society that wants me to shut up and spend.

There’s a mental state in psychology alled anhedonia, meaning literally, “lack of pleasure”. As Princess Irulan says in God Emperor of Dune, “We have lost the ability to think well of ourselves!” Our government and popular culture have made it plain what rigorous and inflexible belief systems we must subscribe to in order to feel positive about America. Reject that, and what’s left is superficial aesthetics, obscure art, and the twin joys of integrity and countercultural glee.

Hey guys: I get pleasure in a lot of things, most of which aren’t possessions. It’s just a mouse, not a profound sociological statement.

Adam, there’s no use denying you are a hedonistic tool of our materialist society. It’s so obvious.
