In some regards, I wish Ev and co. could be more open with their development. Perhaps they are on their list. I’ve wanted to blog about this for a while. My basic question is “What’s so hard about it?” I realize I’m not trying to maintain a large scale system for ma-gillions of users, but with the right environment and programming it doesn’t seem like it ought to be that difficult. It doesn’t seem like they should keep revisiting the same problems over and over. “We’re rewritting the archiving engine.” I also get frustrated with the vague messages. “We’re working on fixing a little issue with publishing. It’s going to be great.” After two or three years now, wouldn’t you expect publishing and archiving to work flawlessly without needing nightly rewrites? I love Ev and I love blogger, but I worry about them as programmers. Not in a bad way – I just wish I could help – or at least understand enough of the problem to make a suggestion or know to stay out of it because it’s beyond me. I honestly suspect it’s their Java code – but that’s just my scripting-bigotry showing.
Ha! Great quote.
Ahh, but you see it’s all free. Pony up $35 and you get their prime servers and preferred treatment. “Beggars can’t be choosers,” ya know.
I paid and it’s the same story.
I paid, too, and yeah, it is pretty much the same story. Only it’s down for slightly shorter periods. 🙂
I’ve often wondered if the issue wasn’t scalability. Things worked great with X number of users, but then it got big, and they’ve been playing “catch up” ever since.
It also doesn’t help that Ev’s been working mostly by himself for the past year. Bad things happen when there’s no QA department. (says the girl who works in QA.)
However, having actually met Ev and all, I’m inclined to give him a break. (funny how that makes a difference, isn’t it?) Besides, I’m too lazy to figure out how to do it better my own darn self. So I’ll deal.
