Back from the beyond

Post – November 13, 2002

My long-dormant but still heat-of-1000-suns hatred of “Touched by an Angel” came burbling to the surface tonight, as I watched a promo for this Sunday’s episode, where (I. am. not. making. this. up.) Della Reese’s angel character gets Alzheimer’s. Boy, heaven’s a rough place, apparently. Does this mean Roma Downey can get lyme disease? One can only hope.

Theologically speaking, an angel getting alzheimer’s is not technically possible… I think. Maybe I’m wrong here.

Oh and I’ve always had a thing for Roma Downey. That irish accent, grrr…

I thought she was scottish, but she never vomits, so I can’t be sure. How about if they CGI in George Burns and give him Scrapie?

Just stupid. You know, I’ve come to assume that any television show will be stupid, so I won’t watch. I figure I’ve been spared innumberable eye rolling moments that way. And on the rare occasions I do watch something, since I’m expecting stupid, if it isn’t brain killingly stupid, it’s a good thing, and if it is, I can shrug. I don’t even bother hating TV shows anymore, because…well…

The Scary Part is that if the TV shows are stupid and people are watching them happily, that means people are stupid…which I’ve been suspecting all along, but the demographic evidence is frightening.

I’ve learned not to judge people by what TV shows they enjoy. Watching a stupid TV show does not make you stupid as well. I now regularly watch shows that I would have poked a friend in the eye for watching a couple of years ago. The thing about TV is that it’s an escape. It’s our chance to downshift into the lowest common denominator without having to explain ourselves. It’s our chance to enjoy the comedy or drama without having to participate and be funny or dramatic ourselves.
Let’s not make TV more than it really is, kids. TV doesn’t have the power to make us anything, and programming is what it is because that’s what people watch. Whether they admit it or not!

But, yes, Touched By an Angle is stupid, and so is the whole Alzheimer’s thing.

i don’t know who you are, but you sure sound mighty not-stupid. and you see tv? and you aint dumb? what’s this world comin’ to?

I just realized that I called it Touched By an Angle. Is this some sort of geometry-drama? Is there a wacky middle-school math teacher involved? Maybe Winnie Cooper is the star! I think I may be on to something!

Thanks, Vikki! I can’t remember the last time when someone called me not-stupid! I giggled like a little japanese girl when I read that! Now I’m going to go watch some shows that I taped last night and have already watched twice! HA!

My husband is a college prof who has early Alzheimer’s in his 50s. I watched the show to keep building my courage with vivid pictures; they help me care for him wisely when I’m under stress better than abstract concepts or principles. I am smart enough to sort out the playful from the real in the program. Faith-building is an elusive process. Being smart isn’t enough to face slow death.
