Back from the beyond

One of the things that disturbs me the most about the current “Damn You, Saddam!” culture is its incredible hypocrisy. (link stolen shamelessly from blee bloo blar BLOG!)

Past US support for Iraq is indeed something we (as a nation) can be ashamed of.

Whether that invalidates any proposed action against Iraq, as Fisk implies, is quite another matter. Arguably, it makes it even *more* our business.

It’s definitely our business if our business is cleaning up messes we’ve made; problem is that in the Islamic world, our street cred is very much in the negative, so any action we *do* take will be seen as negative, pretty much no matter what. The terrorism argument is rather thin, since it would justify us razing the entire region, including Israel, so we’re left with the proposition: fix the problem we created and do it right, or get the hell out for good?

Obviously, the answer is: do things half-assed to justify our continued presence in the region.

Controlling boyfriends never leave you alone, do they?

The US might have a leg to stand on if it admitted it was cleaning up its mess instead of being holier-than-thou. The administration has made no such admissions. Instead, they have released a series of scattershot “reasons,” none of which have really stuck.
