Back from the beyond

Post – October 20, 2002

I was watching “The Anna Nicole Smith Show” tonight and wondered out loud, “Am I going to hell for watching this?”

Rarely has philosophy and pop culture intersected in such a vivid way.

This is an awesome site! Are you sure that ALL words mean things, though?

You’re not going to hell for watching it. However I think watching it might be very much like being in hell.

RuPaul stopped watching Nicole at about week 3 (according to his weblog).

I’m still trying to work out what that means.

While I agree with Adam that “Words Mean Things”, I find that certain combinations of words mean little to nothing. For instance, “Compassionate Conservatism”.

The most vivid intersection of philosophy and popular culture I have ever experienced was flipping channels back and forth betweeen the standup comedy portions of Showtime At The Apollo and Gary McSpadden’s Gospel Jamboree.

Sparky, I’d think something like that could do permanent damage.

Words DO mean things – only rarely what we intend them to mean. Or what we thought we meant when we said them. Tricky damn things.
