Further adventures in meta-gaming

For reasons that I don’t entirely understand, I’m quite intrigued by The Game Neverending, which I just got access to in beta. Actually, I’m in equal measure intrigued and baffled. The best way I can think to describe it is The Sims Online programmed in Hypercard. You wander around, exploring areas and picking up strange stuff. Paper (just paper, not paper money) seems to be the main mode of currency in this made-up world. You can also chat with other players and become their official “acquaintances” or “friends.” The interface, all in Flash, reminds me of Apples eWorld. It’s quite simplistic, but also witty and odd enough to make it strangely compelling. Has anyone played/seen this “game”?

I read the home page last week and thought it interesting but was not compelling enough to sign up.

I actually registered, but failed to find the “spirit of the game” after “playing” it a few times. I found it difficult to keep my attention, really. Probably a fault of mine.

I spent a few hours playing today, Adam, while working on another machine. I had a good time exploring, and it seems to have a lot of potential. Plus it has some interesting bits of humor built in.

I don’t think I registered appropriately, since I got an email reading, “if you are *selected* to test, you’ll receive a password”. I think they could just tell how lame I am.

I got the same initial e-mail, John. Then a week or so later I got the invite. I’m sure you will too.

I’m already a little bored with it, but I think it could be great if they expand the world and the possibilities within it. Supposed to be the full main game released in the spring.

I think it has some potential. In the interim I’ll just keep walking into fires to get red paper, and checking seaweed for blue.

The world as it is now reminds me of a Tom Wham game, for those who remember games like “The Awful Green Things From Outer Space” and “Kings and Things.”
