Kelly, Kelly, Kelly

My girl won “American Idol.” Which isn’t necessarily a good thing – for her or for her potential audience. Now she’s saddled with that label (both record and “A.I.”) for god knows how long, and will probably be forced to release cringe-inducing branded music, even though she’s capable of so much more.

(Embarrassing fanboy moment – if anyone has a tape of Kelly’s “Stuff Like That There” and would be willing to part with a copy, let me know.)

Let’s face it: “American Idol” is the reality-TV equivalent of Marie Osmond’s dolls on QVC. It exists not to discover new talent, but to hawk sponsors like Ford and Coke, and “product” like the latest Kelly Clarkson CD. It’s one of the most craven attempts to package people like so many boxes of Cap’n Crunch so they can be ravenously consumed by a public that will do anything the glowing box tells them to.

So why did I watch every minute?

For your sake, Adam, I hope it’s a better career than Eden’s Crush, Scene 23, or Flickerstick, to name a few other reality TV band hopefuls.

Why did you watch every minute, when you know it makes you a bad person? Kinda like smoking.

You can get that song when it is released on September 17th.

Don’t ask why I know that, I just do.

I wonder whether the contestants REALLY knew when they signed that release form that their performances would be re-edited into a Coke commercial for the final episode. Their fault for signing the release form, but now they are so owned.

Yes you did watch, but, at least you are aware of what it really is. That’s most of the battle right there.
You are concious of the fact that it really is just a bunch of ad space so that makes you not a zombie.

I watched the show. I don’t feel at all dirty for watching it.

Why are those who watched it zombies?

Those “owned” contestants will most likely make way more money this year that you or I. Why is that a bad thing? They wanted to be in show biz. Commercials pay better than most anything other than a steady gig on a tv show.

Don’t most people here realize that this blog is just one of the ways for the host to sell his services? Is that so wrong?

I have always liked watching the “Focus on Adam.” segments of the site.

Just to clarify: I never called people watching the show “zombies.” I would also never criticize anyone for watching it – I obviously thought it was tremendously entertaining, and even encouraged other people to watch it.

My beef is with the producers of the show, who treat the audience as if they were zombies. They don’t even try to hide, even a little bit, the fact that the show isn’t about showcasing talent, it’s about Ford and Coke.

Kelly Clarkson, baby! OK I’ll stop saying that now. Um. Yeah – it won’t last. Where’s Richard, the first Survivor? I give it a year and six months – unless – and I mean unless – she’s actually good enough and assertive enough to do what she loves instead of the canned crap.

Actually, Richard was just in People magazine, in a restospective on reality shows. He seems to be doing pretty well. Then again, his primary goal was the 1 million dolllars, not a lasting career.
