Back from the beyond

Post – September 7, 2001

I was having a conversation recently with Dan Benjamin of When I Am King about the Commodore 64. We both owned these computers, and I think we both looked back fondly on them. For me, it’s my favorite old computer I’ve owned. It had good graphics, great sound, played fun games and even did boring stuff like word processing – I typed all my college papers on mine (shows how old I am), when all my friends were struggling with typewriters in their dorm rooms. And the C64 did all this with 64K (yes, K) of RAM. Are you listening, Bill?

I wonder if anyone else who reads this had one of these gems. I’ve even tried several C64 PC emulators, but they tend to crash my already unstable Win98 system. I do this because of my obsessive love for Jumpman, one of the most fun computer games ever.

UPDATE: You can download a PC port of Jumpman, called Jumpman Lives! It’s fun.

As usual, yes, I will be seeking treatment. Thanks for your concern.

The C64 was a classic. Although I never had jumpman. I was always fond of Raid over Moscow, Conan, Beachhead, and who could forget the many, many floppies! I was techno geek even then when I installed a switch to change the floppy from ,8 to ,9 so I could have two floppy drives. 🙂 I also remember playing a pac-man type game… the name escapes me, by pressing play on the audio tape and flipping it over a half hour later!!!

Ahh the memories… Scary part was I actually had the portable version of the C64 as well.

We had a C64. I used to like playing Elite. I still have it up in the attic with the rest of the computer museum 🙂
Right from my very first, when I was a kid, which was a Sinclair ZX81 with a tape drive which took so long to load games that there was never enough time to play them. Donkey Kong, that was bad. I don’t think I ever got to play that at all.

The C64 was great, even if I was only a kid when we had them, so I can’t say I remember it too well. I don’t think I’ve played Jumpman but my favorite C64 game was Montezuma. I miss that game so much.

    Jumpman! I loved Jumpman!

While I felt more “professional” when I got my first IBM PC (hey, it had *two* floppies, integrated into it! And a monitor!), I missed my C64. In some ways, I still do.

    Jumpman for PC, eh?

So you just casually talk with that visual genius? Do your readers a favor and update this entry so they can see his work! Again! And again!
