Repetiteur

Word of the day: repetiteur (courtesy of “Spellbound,” which I’ll get around to reviewing soon)

I usually link the ‘word of the day’ to its definition on dictionary.com. Amazingly, there’s no entry on that site for this word, which was used in the 1999 National Spelling Bee chronicled in “Spellbound.” Anyone who knows the meaning of the word, without using reference books, Google searches and etc. will earn my sincere admiration.

I think a lot of the high-level spelling bee words won’t be found in average-sized dictionaries.

    When dictionary.com fails, try onelook.com

May I guess at the meaning? I’m guessing a person who repeats often. That’s just because of repetitive and the use of -uer which usually designates a person.

Um… My next guess comes with the aid of my Latin Dictionary. Guessing, a demanding person of some sort.

I was wrong on both guesses. So much for it being latin-based. Need knowledge of French for this one.

My first guess, pre-search, was someone who performs a recitation.

I ran a quick search and saw it used a lot in the context of music, so then I was guessing something along the lines of maybe a singer known for a certain repetoir.

I finally found the meaning, but since nobody else has spoiled it yet, I’m not sure I should.
