Sci-Fi Geeks for President

On The Daily Show tonight, Carol Moseley Braun both used the Vulcan “Live Long and Prosper” salute, and quoted Dune (“Fear is the mind killer”) when talking about terror alerts. I found this cool.

UPDATE: She’s dropping out. I’m glad she’s endorsing Howard Dean, but in a way I’m sad to see her go. As Jon Stewart said last night, “Why is it the candidates in the back of the pack are the only ones making any sense?”

    Too bad she’s dropping out.

Ack! Just when I was starting to like her. 🙂

Jon Stewart had a great line when he said something like, “Why is it the candidates at the back of the pack are the only ones who make sense?”

Woah, I guess I know what we were both watching on tv tonight.

I don’t understand the whole concept of a story that says “she plans to announce…” (in this case dropping out). If you’re planning to announce something, why anounce the planned announcement? Is this a media scoop kind of thing? Are we not supposed to know? Also, since she’s planning to announce dropping out, then why does her web site still solicit donations?

PLAN to announce makes sense to me —- first, cuz DEAN needed the buzz last night that began the publicity about it, deflecting from some of the bad press he was getting. To get some major coverage of it, to have the press THERE at the event. As far as getting donations, they ALL do that after a campaign is over when they have a debt (as she does). Often, after the primaries are over, the winner pledges some help in relieving the debt of those who ran against him (if there is good will between them at that point).Prior to the campaign, I didnt much care for her, but I think she met her unstated goal of lifitng her reputation – she was interesting and thought-provoking in the debates. I hope she actually DOES participate in Dean’s campaign as she’s pledging to do.

The candidates at the back of the pack are in the luxurious position, of not having the same amount of scrutiny paid to their comments, and would naturally be comfortable and willing to say exactly what they feel, and level with people, tell it like it is.

All the front runners are running calculations in their head between every word choice…hoping a new gaffe doesn’t become late-night fodder, or contradict a previous position which would surely get dug up by the other front runners when things get nasty.

I’m guessing right now Wes Clark wishes he would have run this calculation” “ya, I supported military action at one point, but changed my position for these reasons, a, b, c…” Instead of denying vehemently a great number of times that he ever supported action against Iraq-obviously, and inexplicably forgetting his own testimony before the congress.

Those in the back of the pack don’t have to worry about all that crap. Easy to look good when you were never pulled into the mudslinging in the first place! 🙂
