Shutting up

I have laryngitis. (Although I can’t talk, I can still type – aren’t you lucky!) Which makes my horoscope today particularly funny:

Friends know what’s going on with you no matter what you say or don’t say. Telepathic communication reduces the need for actual speech.

It’s funny how much you miss something when you suddenly don’t have it. I really should be calling some clients and other people, but I can barely squeak out a word, and I should be resting my vocal chords anyway. It is sort of calming, though, in a strange way.

I’m sending you some telepathic communication. Do you know what I’m saying?

My voice is just creeping back after a 4 day hiatus. Warm cranberry juice (if you can stand cranberry juice) is very nice for a gone voice. Gingerale works nicely, too.

    Just Be Zenlike and shit.

Thanks, Sherri. If anyone else has any ideas how I can shorten this, let me know. I’m already taking several steaming hot showers every day.

I find that at least for colds, Echinacea is a miracle-worker. If I take it when a cold is coming on it’s far less severe (if not any shorter-lasting). I also was told to gargle with soluble aspirin for a sore throat- but you can also get drugs that anaesthetise your throat, which probably do the same thing. In the UK, they’re called Merocaine – I’m sure there’s a US equivalent.

But if it’s not the pain, and more the loss of your voice that’s bothering you, maybe tea would help. In fact, tea *always* helps, in any bad situation.

Just keep pouring the fluids in, and nyquill at night.

I don’t know about laryngitis, but this helps sooth my sore throat when I have a cold:

Herbal tea with lots of lemon juice and honey

There’s another trick, from the long ago when I used to sing professionally. Lemon Juice. It will bring the voice back around for a short while if you really need it. Some use tabasco but that’s awful.

Also, if you can find Slippery Elm lozenges, that can help quite a bit. Some of them don’t taste so much like glue, either.

I’m going for another cup of warm cranberry juice.

When I have a sore throat I gargle with warm salt water. It’s truly disgusting but it works wonders. Salt in general works wonders on germies. Also, if something is coming on, I’ll feel it in my ears first. So if my ears are sore, I dip a Q-tip in rubbing alcohol then swab out my ear. I do this every morning for a couple days.

Try olive leaf extract or steep some olive leaves and make tea with them. Knocks it right out. I gave this to my whole sick family last year the day before my brother’s wedding, and we all woke up feeling perfect. Don’t treat the symptoms, baby. They’re there to help you. I’m dealing with the same thing today, but I think three straight days of karaoke didn’t help matters.

Where does one get this olive leaf extract, or olive leaves?
Any tricks for a constantly running nose?

One can usually find assorted olive leafy goodness at most health food stores. Phone first. It’s cold outside.
As for the runny nose, I think you’re on your own.

Pseudofed? Listen, go buy a gallon jug of Aqua Pura (H20),
set it on the counter in the am, and get it all into you by the time you go to bed. You can heat it, add lemon & honey, powdered ginger, tea, a bouillon cube (Knorrs), or ice it, flavor it with lemon, kool-aid, or alka-selzer for colds lozenges. Just gag it all down somehow, and you will feel better in the morning. If you are in the hospital, what’s the first thing they do? Hook you up to an IV, and turn on the tap, a liter at a time.
