To put it mildly

TIM RUSSERT: What would the Republicans have done, if a Democratic president had made comments in the State of the Union, comments about national security, that were found to be false?

SEN. JOE BIDEN: …They would have torn his skin off.

-“Meet the Press” today

Great quote from Biden. But it begs the question, why aren’t the Democrats doing the same to Bush?

Maybe because it isn’t going to work. Everybody knows the Bush administration fudged the data for why we went into Iraq, but they knew something that anti-war protesters apparently didn’t know: enough Americans made their decision long before the bombs started dropping. Bush knew he could move forward.

Doesn’t anyone remember the first Persian Gulf war? America had been (and still is) harboring a deep well of resentment just waiting for a target. Iraq was the target then and is the target again now. Bush was just venting America’s spleen. They simply aren’t going to scrutinize themselves at this point and decide it was a bad idea.

No minds are going to be changed today, and a disaster in Iraq is a bad thing regardless of what political purpose it might serve. We have to do what we came to do in Iraq now that we’re there. The political price will need to be exacted after our people stop dying.
