He’ll lose. Because he won — barely — last time based on a unique combination of factors (including widespread ignorance about what kind of president he would actuallly be, widespread resentment of Clinton’s personal morals, and Ralph Nader’s Green party candidacy) that will not be operating this time around. And because he has failed in every single area of his presidency, and people are not stupid enough (well, enough of them are not stupid enough) to vote for him after that. And because Howard Dean represents a real alternative: someone who is basically a centrist on economic policy, has a workable plan to fix the healthcare crisis, and is the opposite of Bush in pretty much every area in which Bush has demonstrated his inadequacy.
He will lose as long as we liberals can get the message out to the uninformed voters of America (and there are plenty of these) that what they hear on Fox News Channel may be just a tad bit biased towards the right.
Also, Time magazine asked the same question a few weeks ago. Did anyone see the response sent in by some woman that basically said, “Yes he will. Thank goodness we have Rush Limbaugh to tell us the truth.” ? Such ignorance makes me weep for the future of this nation.
I so badly want to say he will lose. I certainly hope he will lose. I hope the American people are smart enough to see the alternatives available to them. But then I am reminded of one nagging thing: apparently, people aren’t that smart.
Arnold Schwarzenegger is now governor of California (soon to be renamed Caleefoorneea). I dare not make predictions. Clearly, anything is possible. I don’t know what’s real anymore.
(Side note: ‘Schwarzenegger’ was in my spell checker. ‘ Nietzsche’ was not. Scary further proof.)
Melissa: As I said on lies.com, my natural populist impulse has been taking a beating lately. The fact that GWB has a good chance of winning scares me.
he’ll win the popular vote but lose the oval office. ( and when i say oval office, i’m using it as a synecdoche for the institution of the presidency.)
I think he will lose. I agree with what John C. said above. Plus, I think that the uninformed voters will go to the polls and think to themselves “Am I better off now as compared to the last election?” Most people are worried about the economy and how they are doing overall. The big change over the last 4 years is that the rich got richer and everyone is worse off. I think most people think the situation now sucks and that it is time for a change.
last election Bush had working for him a very widespread feeling that there was no difference between him and Gore. there was no fire, no argueing, no big issues, it was two candidates who both wanted to make themselves look like they were everything. this election won’t be like that at all, and my hopes lie with a landslide victory for the democrats when the average american says “hey, now i don’t have to feel patriotic by supporting the current president regardless of what he does.”
maybe the republicans will notice that their whole “small government” thing isn’t really reflected in fellow who’s conservative with everything except money and war.
