Waving my arms

The estimable John Kusch has been writing some great stuff surrounding his testimony last week against Wisconsin’s proposed “Defense of Marriage” bill. Among the important questions he considers: What is a family? Who owns marriage?

John’s technically on hiatus until October, but I for one am glad he’s not too strict with it. As our friend Nicole said in his comments, “I’m proud of you, and I’m proud that I know you. I’m also glad that you use your powers for good instead of evil.”

That’s very sweet of you to say, Adam. My main hope here is that we can keep public awareness of this issue high in Wisconsin, so that the bill doesn’t just slide by in late September, so that come Christmas all of my relatives can say, “You mean there was a bill on that?” The Republican leadership knows that it doesn’t have a sure win on its hands, and wants to rely on a complacent LGBT community and an unaware heterosexual public to sneak its agenda through.

This one bill isn’t necessarily that important, whether it passes or not; but its significance in the overall public dialogue on gay rights and the nature of marriage is very high. I urge everyone to tell everyone they can about this. Anyone with a gay brother or sister, son or daughter, mother or father, aunt or uncle or cousin should be concerned about this bill.
