Yes, I can write about stuff other than the war
Is anyone still watching “American Idol”? I thought the pseudo-country-rock-whatever theme last night sucked. And the performances weren’t all that great either. Truth be told, generally with AI I watch the first 20 seconds or so of each performance, and then switch over to something else while they finish. I’m never all that interested in listening to the whole thing, and sometimes, even with this much better group, it’s downright painful.
The exception is Ruben Studdard, who leaves everyone else in the dust as far as I’m concerned. When he makes even that stupid Aladdin song sound good, you know he’s something special.
I totally agree Adam. Simon was not digging the country slant either.
But Ruben is just unbelievable, no matter what genre he sings from. I get chills even when they announce he’s up next. I’d sit through 50 minutes of that dude who made us all cringe with his “Like a Virgin” rendition, just to hear Ruben sing. And to top it off he seems to have the most genuine, warm, friendly personality.
Just to clarify, I actually like *good* country music. I just thought the specific songs were ill-chosen and sloppily performed.
I forgot to watch AI last night! Too bad because I’d love to hear Trenyce and Ruben sing country songs. I’ll have to download them from Kazaa and have a listen. I like Ruben and I’m guessing he’ll win, but I really like Trenyce. I thought she sang “I Have Nothing” better than Whitney Houston ever did. I don’t know why, but that Marine annoys the hell out of me.
I don’t remember what Trenyce sang last night, but it was definitely not as good as last week. I like her too, though. The Marine is sort of annoying, especially last night in trying to emulate Garth Brooks with the hat and the running around the stage. One Garth Brooks is more than enough, if you ask me.
I really don’t get this Ruben thing. He seems effortless, but it’s also not entertaining to me. His “singing” seems more like vocal talking with a “come on everybody” thrown in. I am sure that is some level of talent, somewhere, but that style is just “jazz club poetry slam” boring to me.
I can deal with it for 2 minutes at a time, but is it really something album worthy? Or even something you can watch for 30 minutes?
He is much better after he stops singing.
Isn’t vocal talking exactly what singing is? Anyway, I think Roo-ben is tremendously talented. His effortlessness is what sets him apart from everyone else. The problem with all the other contestants is that they are clearly trying too hard. I mean, Ruben has worn the same outfit every week! He doesn’t need any image but his own. You can’t say that about the others.
No, singing is not just vocal talking. Sing-song speech is not singing.
In fact, I can’t tell the difference between his songs.
I’ll grsnt some of them (Demato) look like they are trying too hard, but that doesn’t make having the same range and pitch on every song a talent.
Ruben is incredible. Now, what about this stupid Alladin song? The original by Peabo Bryson and Regina Bell is really beautiful.

I’d just don’t understand what everyone sees in Ruben besides him representing ATL. He seems like the type of cat I see in the streets everyday. Not a bad guy, but he doesn’t b.s. around and you can see that in his face. He takes alot serious. To me he kinda fakes the funk in an emotion sense. Now Trenyce I agree that’s my girl right there. She’s effortless but last night at the country thing, she even felt it was her worst performance in life. And it takes a true artist to realize that. If you notice her movement around the stage, it’s like she’s all ready rehearsed it, and evertime she gets to the stage she works it, like it was nothing.
OHHHH, that MARINE is PISSING me off TOO. I love our soldiers and I’m proud to be an AMERICAN. But it might be time for him to be packing up and head to IRAQ. I think they only changed the genre for Carmen and Josh to display their talents, and they both kind didn’t move me in emotion. When Trenyce and Ruben sing, SOMETIMES CLAY I get a weird shiver in my body when they hit good notes, like it’s unbelievable. And with Clay, he’s the type of guy where you just love to see good things happen to him, because he doesn’t fit the image like SIMON says, but in the same RESPECT he deserves the good things happening to him, not like some of the WHINING top ten finalists last year SIMON criticized and they boohooed they’re way for another week.
